Utopia dystopia final work

I chose to photograph a beautiful building, and then a disgusting bathroom. I took my photos this way to represent the fact that no matter how nice a building can look on the outside, it could always have super gross bathrooms, just like Lincoln. The Utopia in my project is the beautiful building, and the dystopia is the gross bathrooms

Utopia/Distopia Prework

Title of Film or Video:
Ways it showed a UTOPIA
Ways it showed DYSTOPIA
ChildrenAll the students were getting Straight A's, no one was misbehaving and everyone was smilingThe world looked extremely polluted and everyone was actually incredibly unhappy.
The hunger gamesEverything is very organized and the top districts live lavishly and happily. The government has everything under control. The lower districts were all in poverty and had to slave away every day. Also the hunger games are inhumane.

Mad max
It really didn't show a utopia. Mad Max is a dystopian movieEveryone is constantly scrounging for food, water, and gasoline. Everyone is always fighting each other.

A Utopia is an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. A Dystopia is an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic.

I think that the movie Mad Max was a good example of a Dystopia, because there is literally nothing good about the world that the characters live in.

Inspiring Stop motion

Wallace and Gromit's Grand Day Out, being a childhood classic for me, resonates with me a lot. It's one of my favorite stop-motion movies ever made. I like the authenticity of it and how you can see that it's properly homemade. It came out in 1990, a lot earlier before most stop motion movies.

This extremely talented group, Guidelines, made this very detailed stop motion video. This one has less of a plot, but I still appreciate it for the animation. I also really like the clay making itself.

I think this one is very creative and has a bit of realism to it. I like how they act like the axe is heavy when they carry it. The sound is also very nice.

Inspiring Magazine Designs

I was inspired by the vast variety of colors and shapes I saw when researching these. I wasn't so interested in the actual photos of the people, but more by the graphic design and structure of the rest of the magazines. I was very mesmerized by the different methods magazines used to draw in readers, and what they think increases readership. I was very inspired by the audacity of some of the photographs too.

Commercial vs Fine Portraits

Contrasting commercial and fine portraits:

The larger picture is much more relaxed and less exaggerated. It is much more focused on the face and features of MC Ride, and isn't being used to draw in or entice consumers in any way. The picture is only of his face and doesn't focus on anything else.

The smaller picture, (from slate magazine) is much more wild and exciting, including his whole body, the stage and microphone, and the crowd in the background. This commercial portrait is used more heavily to get readers to find out more about MC ride and his band, while the fine art portrait does not.

Commercial portraits

What are Commercial Portraits????

Commercial portraits are to make the subject look good and fashionable, or to advertise a product. You find these all over billboards, magazines, and commercials online.

Examples:
From Fantastic Man magazine

For Brick Magazine

Why do I like these portraits??

Well, I believe that both of them are highly interesting and enticing, and make people want to open the magazine to read the article. They both highlight the best things about the subjects and make them "look good".

Fine art portraits

What is a fine Portrait????

In my opinion, a Fine Portrait is a photograph that accurately represents the subject, while simultaneously showing off the photographer's prowess and skill. The picture needs to capture as much essence as it can over the subject, be aesthetically pleasing, and not be "overdoing" it.
Christopher Walken by Richard Avedon

Frank Ocean by Fader

I like both these portraits because they very skillfully demonstrate exactly what both men look like. The Christopher Walken photograph shows a more stoic expression, but with much more deeper and meaningful connotation. The Frank Ocean portrait gives a tiny hit towards his cool t shirt, which I like a lot about that picture.

Project #9 - Surrealism

First Surrealism Image:

This is a photo of the short sands beach on the Oregon Coast Line. Included is a cutout picture of Quinn, a photo of a building I took in London, a cutout from one of my favorite video games, and a few clones of people in the original picture (if you can spot them).

Second Surrealism Image:

This image shows surrealism, because buildings are not meant to look like this! I also changed the saturation and tint to show very vibrant colors which you usually don't see on large buildings. The original picture was a photograph of the design museum in London a year ago. I edited all four pictures in photoshop. All four pictures are exactly the same with a different colored tint.

Third Surrealism Image:

In my second image, I again copy and pasted the same image into a 2x2 grid, changing the tint each time. The original picture is a photograph of my friend, Quinn Johnson, on the Lincoln Patio. I cut out and pasted his body multiple times, rotating and transforming it each time. I also used the fill tool to create the paint-spill looking designs in the corner of each photo.

Daguerrotype and cyanotype

Cyanotype Picture:
What is a cyanotype?

A cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings, referred to as blueprints. The process uses two chemicals; ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide.

What is a daguerrotype?

A daguerrotype is a photograph taken by an early photographic process employing an iodine-sensitized silvered plate and mercury vapor.

Community Project collage

I chose to take pictures that really captured the grey and brown color scheme of the Lincoln High School patio. It was pretty easy, since most things stay with the same colors. I combined some pictures to make it look like they were connected, such as the two pictures on the bottom right and the pictures of the wall on the middle-left. I worked on this project on my own, so I didn't have to collaborate with anyone to make decisions. A few of my photos were turned upside down or sideways to make it more interesting. I also included a few pictures with my friends in too. I took all of these pictures with my iPhone.

Carbon transfer is a printing process that creates an image formed by a layer of hardened, pigmented gelatin on a surface which is usually paper. The surface on which the image is printed is normally referred to as the “support” because carbon images can be printed on a variety of surfaces such as glass, metal, and synthetic paper sheets. It can also be used on a variety of natural papers.

Daguerreotype photography was the first commercially successful photographic process in the history of photography. Named after the inventor, Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, each daguerreotype is a unique image on a silvered copper plate.

In contrast to photographic paper, a daguerreotype is not flexible and is rather heavy. The daguerreotype is accurate, detailed and sharp. It has a mirror-like surface and is very fragile. Since the metal plate is extremely vulnerable, most daguerreotypes are presented in a special housing.
